The Path of Chivalry
The Knighthood of Purity, also described as the Path of Chivalry, promotes the service-oriented, chivalric values of Hazrat Inayat Khan.
Since the time of the prophets, mysticism and chivalry have gone hand-in-hand. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that Hazrat Inayat Khan was also a master of spiritual chivalry, or futuwwa. He describes 40 Rules, 10 each of Iron, Copper, Silver and Gold (available here). In 1926, before returning to India, Hazrat Inayat Khan appointed four Knights of Purity and eight Heralds of the Message, planting the seed of this Inayati Activity.
In today’s world, there is a call to maintain personal integrity and act always from a place of honour and respect. The Rules enable us to notice and question our habitual patterns of thought and behaviour and help us to live our ethical values more fully. Increasing awareness of our ingrained attitudes also helps us recognise and confront systemic injustices in society and the part we might be playing in them.
All sincere devotees seeking to study and practice the philosophy and art of life described by Hazrat Inayat Khan, are welcome to enter the Path of Chivalry. The task is to recite each Rule, one at a time, and apply its message in daily life. Each Rule is recited once a day over a forty-day period. The completion of the set of ten thus takes 400 days. If no days are missed, the completion of all four sets (Iron, Copper, Silver, and Gold) takes 1600 days (four years and 140 days). Â
When a devotee applies to commence this Path, he or she is designated an Iron Herald and undertakes to recite and practice the Iron Rules. On completion of the Iron Rules, they can apply for designation to become a Copper Herald and commence the recitation and practice of the Copper Rules. This procedure is repeated at the completion of each of the remaining sets of Rules.Â
When all forty Rules have been recited and practiced for forty days each, the Golden Herald is qualified to receive, upon invitation, the accolade of Knight of Purity.
In the UK, a monthly on-line discussion group is held for those wishing to share their experiences of this Path and find mutual support for the journey. It is held on the 1st day of the month, every month (except January and August), at 4.30-6.00pm via Zoom.Â
